Nutrition was a late career change for me, despite a lifetime of interest in how food affects our health. After working in the corporate world for many years which I really enjoyed, I made a decision to do something I would be passionate about every day. So whilst working in London where we lived for nearly 10 years I completed my science qualifications at night and on the weekends, at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and Berkshire University. I was very fortunate to be offered work at a clinic on London's famous Harley Street as a nutritional therapist soon after I'd finished my training.
Prior to my nutritional qualification, I was working on the trading floor at Goldman Sachs doing long hours, studying and maintaining the travelling and social life of a typical expat. I thought I had a clue about stress and tiredness - and then I had children!
I have two beautiful girls aged 9 and 8. Trying to be a good mum as well as retain a sense of self and operate more than one busy business has been by far the most challenging chapter of my life especially when the girls were younger.
What does this have to do with being a Nutritionist? Well it means I'm very realistic and I understand how difficult it can be to implement good healthy habits into a busy family. I have had my own health issues, some of which have become quite debilitating over the last few years, and prevented me doing what I love. I'm constantly working through these health issues and the thing that has had by far the biggest impact is food choices and lifestyle. I love to help people be as healthy as they can be without adding stress in the process. Simple things can make a big difference. And I'm a big believer in allowing yourself to indulge without guilt.
I love the beach, yoga and of course food! I am really passionate about children getting the best start in life and it's a bonus if we can pick up health problems early. Kids need adequate nutrition in order for them to thrive. One of my daughters was diagnosed as a coeliac at age 7. She did not have any gastrointestinal symptoms, often associated with this condition. As a mum, sometimes we just know when something is not quite right. I listen carefully to concerned parents. I help individuals and families navigate a nutrition industry which can be confusing and overwhelming. My own food journey is constantly evolving, despite attending nutrition seminars around the world for the past 15 years, I've struggled to make some changes I know I needed. Sometimes it's about timing not knowledge. I like to work with people exactly where they are at right now. Some people eat better than I do, and that's great because I can give them some seriously fancy nutrition advice. Others are at the very beginning of their health journey and it's a privilege to help them get started.
I don't believe in 'dieting', I've never been one to deprive myself of the things I love. It's about moderation and balance for me and those that follow my advice.
I have a special interest in skin conditions, children's health and helping busy mums do their absolute best for themselves and their families without adding stress to their already crazy lives! Come and see me at The Beer Shed for a consult.
