DNA

I have the good fortune of having access to Smart DNA http://www.smartdna.net.au

The absolute latest in personalized, predictive and preventative medicine for the 21st Century.

Do you know what your cardiovascular profile is? I was shocked at mine. I am a 57kg Nutritionist with no known family history of heart disease but the gene combination I inherited means I am very high risk of forming sdLDL’s – these are the really nasty little cholesterols that you don’t want. My fat and carbohydrate recommendations are very specific now I know what genotype I am. Funnily enough even though my grandmother has had several strokes I have low risk of stroke and no problem dealing with salt.

Chemicals, charred meats, burnt toast and toxins in general are a huge problem for me (although I knew this by my symptoms). Due to the lack of important enzymes in the liver required for detoxification I also struggle with any drugs. I suffered from swelling and severe hives for 2 years after taking malaria tablets prior to a trip to India. Now the cause is obvious and how I wish I’d known what was going on back then. Had I known this, I could have addressed it with very specific supplements, rather than taking a stab in the dark.

I took folic acid before having both my babies of course as any mother is recommended to do. However it turns out it was a waste of time as it would have had no effect, I needed activated folate . This means due to reduced enzyme activity my DNA is only repairing at 50% capacity effecting my brain and heart health. Luckily I gave birth to 2 healthy babies and I can address my high risk of dementia early and hopefully prevent it.

The good news is it’s all changeable.

Genes can be modified with nutrition. Calories are not just calories, calories are information to the cells! What do you think provides better information an avocado or a packet of chips? An obvious one maybe but how do you know if you should be eating a high fat (35%) or very low fat diet (20%) without a gene test? I didn’t and I’ve been studying nutrition for 8 years. Turns out I’m the type in the middle – 25% fat – the classic Mediterranean diet suits me. Which is great because I love my red wine.

Alcohol has protective effects for some types and negative effects on others. It’s good to know these things.

The geneticist was able to tell me that one of my parents is at high risk of cardiovascular disease and would require a low fat diet and the other one of my parents is in the intermediate risk group and this genotype requires a high fat diet – opposites! So who needs what? They don’t know that, unless they tested at least one of the parents.

It’s fascinating stuff and I am so excited about having access to this test. I can help people further now with no guess work involved. The clients with serious and difficult health issues we now have something that could make a real difference. And for those that are just really into their health and want them and their family members to live a long and healthy life – what a great tool to insure you are doing the best you can to prevent illness and feel fantastic. For the cost of about 8-9 visits to a GP you will get a blueprint of who you are at gene level as well as specific dietary and lifestyle recommendations.

The test is non invasive and easy – it is a saliva sample. The cost is $520 which includes 1 hour explanation/consultation with me and written individualised nutrition programme.

If you are interested in having this test done, then please contact me by email or phone to discuss.
